Abstract The family Lebiasinidae includes a number of miniature and medium-sized fish species that are endemic to the Neotropical region. Pyrrhulina is the second most speciose lebiasinid genus and it is also the one with the most taxonomic uncertainties. In this context, the present study focused on the Pyrrhulina morphospecies found in a number of different drainage basins in South America to test the alternative proposals on the arrangement of the taxonomic units found within what is assumed to be a single nominal species, Pyrrhulina australis, based on a DNA Barcoding approach. The results of the analyses indicate that Pyrrhulina australis is a species complex, with intraspecific (within-group) genetic distances of up to 3.74%, well above the Optimal Threshold of 1.79% defined in the present study. The species delimitation analyses revealed a surprising level of diversification among the morphospecies evaluated, in particular, in the clade that encompasses Pyrrhulina australis (from the Paraguay River) + P. cf. rachoviana (Lower Paraná River), P. aff. australis I (Araguaia River)/II (Paraguay River)/III (Upper Paraná River)/IV(Guaporé River),and P. marilynae (Teles Pires River), which were arranged in six distinct evolutionary lineages that align with the geographical distribution of the respective drainage basins.

Resumo A família Lebiasinidae é endêmica da região Neotropical, composta por espécies de peixes em miniaturas e de médio porte. O gênero Pyrrhulina é o segundo maior em número de espécies e o grupo com mais incertezas taxonômicas dentre os representantes dessa família. Diante disso, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar morfoespécies provenientes de diferentes bacias de drenagens, a fim de testar as diferentes propostas de reconhecimento de unidades taxonômicas dentro do que se acreditava ser a espécie nominal Pyrrhulina australis, utilizando o princípio do DNA Barcoding. Os resultados mostraram que Pyrrhulina australis é um complexo de espécies, com distância intraespecífica dentro do grupo de 3,74%, valor acima do Threshold Ótimo de 1,79% definido para este estudo. As análises de delimitação de espécies indicam uma surpreendente diversidade dentro das morfoespécies analisadas, especialmente no clado que engloba Pyrrhulina australis (rio Paraguai) + P. cf. rachoviana (baixo rio Paraná), P. aff. australis I (rio Araguaia), II (rio Paraguai), III (alto rio Paraná), IV(rio Guaporé)e P. marilynae (rio Teles Pires),que apresentou seis linhagens evolutivas que podem estar relacionadas ao padrão de distribuição pelas bacias de drenagens.

RESUMO O conceito de rio continuo prediz que mudanças graduais na geomorfologia e hidrologia de um rio podem causar mudanças longitudinais na estrutura de comunidades aquáticas. Nesse contexto, avaliamos como variáveis ambientais (condutividade elétrica, pH, transparência e velocidade da água), fatores espaciais (distância da cabeceira e Moran’s eigen vector maps - MEMs) e presença de barragens afetam as assembleias de peixes de pequeno porte ao longo de um trecho de 105 km do alto Rio Branco, um tributário do Rio Madeira, bacia Amazônica, Brasil. Coletas com rede de arrasto foram realizadas em 15 pontos a jusante e montante de barragens durante a estação seca de 2019. Capturamos um total de 4.330 indivíduos, distribuídos em três ordens, nove famílias e 26 espécies (e um indivíduo híbrido). Condutividade elétrica e pH foram afetados significativamente pela presença de barragens e pela distância da cabeceira. A riqueza de espécies e a abundância não variaram em função das variáveis ambientais. Ao contrário da riqueza de espécies, que não variou ao longo do trecho amostrado, a abundância apresentou uma relação negativa com a distância da cabeceira. A composição de espécies variou significativamente em resposta ao pH, a fatores espaciais lineares e à presença de barragens. Nossos resultados sugerem que a mudanças na composição de espécies de peixes de pequeno porte no alto Rio Branco ocorre devido à variação em características da água, em função da limitação na dispersão inerente das espécies e em resposta à presença de barragens.

ABSTRACT The river continuum concept predicts that gradual changes in river geomorphology and hydrology can drive longitudinal changes in aquatic community structure. Accordingly, we evaluated how environmental variables (electrical conductivity, pH, water transparency and water velocity), spatial factors (distance from headwaters and Moran’s eigen vector maps - MEMs), and the presence of dams affect small-sized fish assemblages along a 105-km stretch of the upper Branco River, a tributary in the Madeira River, Amazonas Basin, Brazil. Seine-net based collections were carried out at 15 sites up- and downriver from dams during the 2019 dry season. We captured a total of 4,330 individual fish belonging to three orders, nine families and 26 species (and a hybrid individual). Electrical conductivity and pH were affected by the presence of dams and the distance from headwaters. Species richness and abundance did not vary in response to environmental variables. While species richness showed no significant variation along the sampled river section, abundance showed a negative relationship with distance from headwaters. Species composition varied significantly in response to pH, linear spatial factors and the presence of dams. Our results suggest that change in species composition of small-sized fish assemblages in the upper Branco River occurs due to variation in water characteristics, inherent dispersal limitation, and in response to the presence of dams.

Resumo A estrutura de assembleias de água doce pode ser influenciada diretamente pela urbanização ou indiretamente por reduções em heterogeneidade ambiental (HA). Para separar os efeitos da urbanização dos da HA, variáveis substitutas a esses processos precisam ser não-correlacionadas. Avaliamos os efeitos do grau de urbanização e HA na estrutura das assembleias de peixes. Amostramos peixes em 45 riachos localizados na área urbana de Cuiabá. Avaliamos os efeitos da urbanização e HA na riqueza rarefeita de espécies de peixes (Srarefeita), contribuição local para a diversidade beta (LCBD) e composição de espécies utilizando modelos lineares e análise de redundância baseada em distância. Nossos índices de urbanização e HA não foram correlacionados. Observamos que tanto a Srarefeita e a LCBD diminuíram com aumentos no grau de urbanização, mas não foram correlacionadas com a HA. Também observamos que as abundâncias de poucas espécies de peixes nativos correlacionaram-se com HA. Serrapinnus microdon, S. calliurus, Hemigrammus tridens e Astyanax lacustris foram mais abundantes em riachos com menor grau de urbanização. A não-nativa Poecilia reticulata foi mais abundante em riachos com maior grau de urbanização. Nossos resultados destacam que a urbanização resulta em impactos negativos nas assembleias de peixes, tais como reduções da diversidade e a dominância de espécies não-nativas.

Abstract The structure of freshwater assemblages may be driven directly by urbanization or indirectly by a reduction in environmental heterogeneity (EH). Disentangling the effects of urbanization and EH requires uncorrelated proxies of each of these factors. We assessed the effects of the degree of urbanization and EH on the structure of fish assemblages. We sampled fish in 45 streams located in the urban area of Cuiabá. We assessed the effects of urbanization and EH on rarefied fish species richness (Srarefied), the local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD), and composition with linear models and distance-based redundancy analysis. Our indexes of urbanization and EH were not correlated. We found that both Srarefied and the LCBD decreased with an increasing degree of urbanization, but were not associated with EH. We also noted that few native fish species abundances were associated with the EH. Serrapinnus microdon, S. calliurus, Hemigrammus tridens, and Astyanax lacustris were abundant in streams with a lower degree of urbanization. The non-native Poecilia reticulata was more abundant in streams with a higher degree of urbanization. Our results highlight that urbanization leads in negative impacts on fish assemblages, such as decreases in diversity and the dominance of non-native species.

Resumo: A substituição de florestas tropicais por sistemas de produção representa uma das principais fontes de alteração nos ecossistemas de riachos. Contudo, a composição atual das assembleias também depende do tempo decorrente desde o início dessas transformações e, desta forma, o conhecimento de cenários históricos variados pode facilitar a realização de ações que envolvam a recuperação de ambientes aquáticos. Neste estudo, foi realizado o inventário dos peixes de riachos em bacias cujo desmatamento foi intensificado nos últimos 20 anos, para compor uma linha de base que possa ser usada em estudos ecológicos e taxonômicos. Foram amostradas as variáveis do hábitat, físicas e químicas e os peixes de 60 riachos da região noroeste do estado de Mato Grosso, nas bacias dos rios Aripuanã e Juruena. No total, 130 espécies foram registradas, com predominância numérica de pequenos caracídeos e grande número de espécies raras, sendo 50 espécies representadas por menos que dez indivíduos e 19 por apenas um indivíduo. Aproximadamente 15% dos táxons amostrados foram identificados somente no nível genérico e vários precisam de estudos taxonômicos e moleculares mais detalhados para alcançar identificações satisfatórias. As espécies não-nativas foram representadas por dois exemplares e nenhuma espécie sabidamente ameaçada foi registrada. Embora a qualidade do hábitat seja superior nos riachos florestados, não houve diferenças na riqueza das assembleias quando comparada aos riachos de microbacias de pastagem, porém com faixa ripária florestada, ou com maior desmatamento. Contudo, a abundância foi maior nesses dois grupos de riachos, como resultado da dominância de caracídeos de pequeno porte.

Abstract: The replacement of tropical forests to production systems is one of the leading causes of riverine ecosystem alterations. However, current assemblages’ composition may also result from the time since these transformations have begun. Therefore, the knowledge of diversified historical scenarios can facilitate the accomplishment of actions that involve the aquatic environments recovery. In this study, an inventory of stream fish was carried out in basins whose deforestation was intensified in the last 20 years, to compose a baseline for ecological and taxonomic studies. The habitat, physical and chemical variables, and the fish assemblages from 60 streams in the northwest region of the state of Mato Grosso, in the Aripuanã and Juruena river basins, were sampled with standardized procedures. For a total of 130 species, a numerical predominance of small-sized Characidae and great rarity were registered, with 50 species represented by less than ten individuals and 19 singletons. Approximately 15% of the sampled taxa were identified only at the generic level, and for several taxa, more detailed taxonomic and molecular studies are required in order to achieve satisfactory identifications. None threatened species were so far reported. On the other hand, two specimens of non-native species were sampled. Although habitat quality is higher in forested streams, no differences in the species richness were registered when compared to the pasture with riparian forest streams or to more deforested streams. However, abundance was greater in these last two streams groups as a result of small-sized characins dominance.

Abstract Parodontidae is a small group of fish and some species are particularly difficult to identify due to the lack of sufficiently consistent morphological traits. Cytogenetically, the species possess 2n = 54 chromosomes and are either sex-homomorphic or sex-heteromorphic (regarding its chromosomes). We evaluated data on color, tooth morphology, cytogenetics, and mitochondrial markers (COI) in Apareiodon specimens from the Aripuanã River (Amazon basin) and the results were compared to other congeneric taxa. Morphological results show an overlap of body color and tooth morphology to other known Apareiodon. The cytogenetics data showed that the 2n = 54 chromosomes, 50 m/sm + 4 st and, a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system in Apareiodon sp. are common to other species of the genus. However, the number and chromosomal localization of the 45S ribosomal and pPh2004 satellite DNA sites, in addition to W chromosome localization of the pPh2004 appear to be exclusive cytogenetic features in Apareiodon sp. Our phylogenetic tree revealed well-supported clades and confirmed, by barcode species delimitation analysis, a new Molecular Operational Taxonomic Unit (MOTU) for Apareiodon sp. (Aripuanã River). As a whole, the above features support the occurrence of a new species of the Apareiodon, thus far unknown for the Parodontidae.
